“Tecno the Base” is in many ways a standard role-playing game, however, its innovative look will immediately captivate gamers. It is set on high-tech space ship with an elaborate set design that looks as if it came out of an “Alien” film or another such masterpiece of science fiction.
The goal is to gain as much information about the contents of the ship as possible to find the way out. The sound blends a very dark music score with effects that liven up the action, taking you directly into the world your character is trapped in. You meet others in your adventure who are very ambiguous, requiring much discernment to know whom to trust. Having to be constantly on guard of your surroundings calls for a great deal of alertness for the player, making distraction or boredom very difficult, if not impossible. The characters and some of the detective-type work done in this game will remind one greatly of the classic science fiction film “Blade Runner.” This is perhaps as high as of a compliment as such a game can get from this reviewer.
Unfortunately, however, there is one drawback to “Techno the Base.” This is the difficulty of accessing pertinent information. For example, written files and computer logs are necessary sources to find your way in the space ship. Once the material is spotted, figuring out the controls of how to pick them us and how to use them through the item access menu are unnecessarily difficult. The game play itself is very challenging and complex as it should be, but learning how to find what you need to proceed with game play certainly has no purpose being as complex as it is. Throughout the games, directions are not easily accessible. The people of whose trustworthiness we need to remain uncertain will provide information of where to find the information we need, but what to do with it once we have found is unfortunately left up to complete guesswork, making game play sometimes frustrating.
Despite this drawback that provides unnecessary frustration, the sheer thrill of feeling so genuinely caught in this spaceship through the brilliantly designed graphics is more than enough for a very high reccomendation. Once the game is purchased, it must be assumed that more specific directions will be available; this should be more than enough incentive to look past the drawback presented here and purchase “Techno the Base,” keeping in mind that this review is based on a trial preview.
